Geese are larger birds than ducks, and their down clusters are correspondingly larger. Larger clusters trap more air per ounce of down — which is exactly what fill power measures. This is why goose down consistently achieves higher fill power ratings than duck down.
- Duck down typically achieves fill power ratings of 400–650 cuin.
- Goose down regularly achieves 550–950+ cuin, with the finest Scandinavian and Polish goose down reaching the very top of the scale.
At the same fill weight, a goose down quilt will be warmer, lighter, and loftier than a duck down quilt. At the same warmth level, a goose down quilt will use less fill — making it lighter and more breathable.
Longevity and Resilience
Larger down clusters are more resilient. They spring back to full loft more readily after compression, and they maintain their structure over years of use. This is why a high-quality goose down quilt, properly cared for, can last 20 years or more — while a duck down quilt at a similar price point will typically lose loft and warmth much sooner.
